I’m not sure how many of you watch Fox’s Extracted, but I figured since there’s only one episode per week of The Traitors US. The Traitors UK has now ended. There’s no Bachelor. And nothing until Survivor 50 and House of Villains, which don’t begin until the end of February. So, I figured I’d recap Extracted in the meantime. This is the recap for the first episode of the second season!
This show casts a lot of unknowns or “civilians”, but there are a few familiar faces this season, like THE Sandra Diaz-Twine who won Survivor twice and her daughter Nina Twine. Nina was on Survivor AU and Anonymous. As well as BB21‘s and The Challenge’s Analyse Talavera.
Filmed up in northern Ontario, Canada, families in HQ help their loved ones survive in the wilderness. The survivalist may or may not have any experience with surviving in the wild. Using strategic means, the family back at HQ provides survival tools that arrive in supply drops and help them in survival trials. The families are able to watch their loved ones on live feeds 24/7. (I’d be a natural at this.) They can even track their health. Alliances are formed. Families get screwed. The first season got very cutthroat, IMO.
They’re playing for $250,000! If their loved ones suffer too much, the family members in HQ and/or the survivalists can ask to be extracted and the family at HQ pushes the extraction button. But that also means they’re out of the game and lose their chance at winning the quarter of a million dollars.
Does that sound interesting to you? It did to me, so I hope you at least like my recaps.
Let’s get this season started! As usual, I speak in spoiler font, so if you haven’t watched and/or don’t want to know, look away now!

The premiere episode begins with the survivalists and their families arriving in northern Ontario, Canada. They give a short intro about themselves and why the survivalist thinks they can do this.
These aren’t all of the teams, but I tried to get most of them. Some weren’t even introduced.

Interestingly, both Sandra and Nina aren’t the survivalists, but are in the HQ instead, which is probably the best decision because they’re very strategic and they’ve both done Survivor (Nina played the AU version). They explain Eric (Nina’s boyfriend) always says to them, ‘I would’ve done this and I would’ve done that.’ So they told him to put his money where his mouth is. 🤭 Of course, everybody knows who Sandra is and knows she won Survivor twice. Some call her a villain…but I don’t know about that. And yes, be prepared for lots of Sandra gifs in my posts.

The survivalists are supposed to build their shelters before darkness descends. Some shelters are better than others, of course, and some don’t even have shelters. Everyone soon discovers how cold it can get at night in the wilderness. They really need to get fires going.
Olsen, a young man has his shelter built, but is bored. Ummm…why don’t you try to start a fire or find food? Soon, a baby bear comes to visit his camp. Who’s bored now? Everyone at HQ watches helplessly in terror, wondering where his parents are? They’re not even in the HQ room where they watch the live feeds. They’re missing all of this. He uses a horn to scare the bear off, which works. Olsen’s parents are horrified when everyone fills them in about what happened. And they missed it!
Back at HQ they have to think about ranking the survivalists from strongest to weakest and keep it mind.
In the middle of the night, Analyse and her mom are the only ones awake and she can’t understand why nobody’s staying up. She and her mom had promised her sister they’d stay up all night the first night to watch over her.
Daniel comes into HQ and says, “hey, what’s this ‘in case of emergency break glass’ box doing here? Let’s break it and see!” (This is paraphrased, snarky and not a direct quote.)

Analyse and her mom are hesitant to tell him what to do. Analyse ‘s mom walks away because she wants no part in what he’s doing. Analyse watches as he breaks the glass. There’s a blanket inside and he grabs it. The alarm goes off, waking everybody up. He tries to frame Sandra for it by placing glass by her desk.
Everyone is called into HQ, and that’s when David knew the jig was up. He realizes he messed things up with everyone.

He’s told to put the blanket into a crate. Everyone else arrives at HQ just in time to watch the crate get air dropped by a drone into his brother’s camp. Messy! Now everybody knows what he’d been up to. His brother is like, WTF? And still half asleep. The best part IMO is David’s plan to frame Sandra failed. Everybody knows it was him.

There’s an imminent supply drop incoming. The HQ people have to line up in order from strongest to weakest. The weakest players get to go into the supply room first, and so on. They have two minutes to arrange each other in order — otherwise the supply drop will be cancelled. They each receive three items, so they can trade for other items with other teams.
Meanwhile, Olsen is begging to get extracted. Yes, already. Something tells me he gets everything he ever asks for. To me, he’s just pouting because it’s harder than he had thought it would be. He doesn’t even care if there’s a supply drop waiting for him. He didn’t even want to do this. He’s supposed to be in college. It was his dad’s idea and he got dragged into it. His dad says he could’ve won if he had done it instead. So why didn’t you do it? Why force Olsen?

Olsen’s parents decide to extract him. Okay, byeeee dude! I don’t have respect for quitters. Sandra says if they can’t handle it, they should extract themselves. It’s one less person.
After Olsen leaves, all of the survivalists are testing out the supplies their families sent them, starting with fire. Most are satisfied, but Rhoman has no fire and therefore no water. Two things a person desperately needs. His mother feels like she failed him and runs out of the HQ room because she feels bad about not giving him those things.
That’s pretty much the end of the episode. We got to see a preview for the rest of the season! It looks like it’ll be as cutthroat and chaotic as last season.
Just to be different, here’s a gallery of my poorly done screenshots from this episode, if you want to check them out.
